WOW) I would prefer to do so efficiently. Target Display Mode is the name of a feature that allowed users with certain iMacs to basically use their iMac as an external display for another source, such as their MacBook, a PS4, or even a Windows PC. I am able to setup a connetion to the machine via my network using smb, however, its very slow and with the amount of data I have to get out of that machine (I've been using it for 10 years. I dont see it in disk utitlity to be able to do anything with it either. TDM is a boot mode unique to Macs which bypasses the Operating System and enables its drives to behave as Thunderbolt or FireWire external mass storage device. I read through your blog post (very interesting :)) and ran some of the scripts that you linked to - but it still did not work :(. It should support target display mode - but it does not seem to be working.
WHAT IS TARGET DISK MODE ON IMAC MAC
I can see the firewire and thunderbolt icon on the old machine move across the screen. III Enabling Target Disk Mode on the Mac Once the Mac is connected to the Falcon, the Mac has to be booted up into Target Disk Mode (TDM). I am not very familiar with all the low level mac stuff - still, I was trying to get this to work on my (late) 2009 iMac. I boot the machine into Target disk mode and the thunderbolt cable is connected, however, the volume never mounts.

The old machine is running High Sierra 10.13.6 and the file system is OS Extended Journaled. The new machine is running Big Sur, 11.2.3 The file system is APFS. If you use a Powerbook in this mode be sure its plugged in to AC. A Powerbook will also work as Target or Host. Im working this process using a G4 as the Host and my iMac with Superdrive as the Target. The Host is the Mac to which you are bringing a drive from the Target Mac. I figured target disk mode would be the way to do so and I got the Thunderbolt to newer thunderbolt and the cables at the apple store. 'Host' and 'Target' are Apples terms in Target Disk Mode. I hope this finds everyone well! I purchased a new Imac and need to transfer files from the older machine.
